Swansea University’s Bay Campus is one of the largest knowledge economy projects in the UK and among the top five in Europe. VINCI Construction UK was awarded the contract to design and build Phase 2A, which consists of 2 major buildings.
A £30m scheme, to construct a single 9 storey accommodation building, comprising 411 rooms, the project will provide additional high-quality living accommodation for the stunning new Bay Campus, bringing the total amount of student rooms to circa 2,500.
The accommodation followed the same traditional design concept as the previous phases delivered by VINCI Construction UK, with traditional style frontages, commanding front door entrances set within stone surrounds, tall ceilings and generous sized windows in a collegiate courtyard layout arrangement.
The second of the two building projects is a £10m contract, to construct the 3 storey Navitas academic building, for overseas students, sitting foundation degrees. The building will provide a high-quality teaching facility for students, adding to the already impressive Bay Campus.
This major project, overseen by expert developer and regeneration specialist St. Modwen, in partnership with Swansea University, is situated on a 65-acre former BP site in Neath Port Talbot and is now one of the largest knowledge economy schemes in Europe. The Bay Campus development aims to provide facilities for multinational, small and medium sized enterprises to co-locate alongside academic, student accommodation and research facilities.
The current projects continue the long-standing working relationship between the parties on the Bay Campus Development.
Building on our success from the previous phases, Safety For Design have been appointed as Principal Designer on both projects. We supported VINCI Construction UK, through the design process, attending regular design team meetings, where we offer advice and assistance to the design team, taking into consideration health and safety, and the end user Swansea University/Navitas.
Safety For Design delivered comprehensive Operational and Maintenance Manuals, for Phase 1C, to support the Health and Safety File. Following on from this Safety For Design has developed a new Department, headed by Rob Bryant to collate and deliver industry leading Operational and Maintenance Manuals. VINCI Construction UK were delighted to utilise this service again.
