NEW COVENT GARDEN MARKET REGENERATION

New Covent Garden Market Regeneration

New Covent Garden Market Regeneration is being undertaken by VSM, the 50/50 joint venture between St. Modwen Properties PLC and VINCI PLC.

VSM was selected by Covent Garden Market Authority in March 2012 to deliver the regeneration of the New Covent Garden Market site, including the provision of a modern new market.

This landmark 10-year project, the largest in the Nine Elms regeneration area, will see the delivery of over 500,000ft2 of new state-of-the-art market facilities across a 37 acre site which will house the 200 market businesses currently employing around 2,500 people.

Safety For Design have worked on this project for over 4 years, in various roles, including Principal Designer on the Flower Market Demolition, Principal Designer on the new Apex Road and as Clients CDM Advisor on the larger project.

As part of our role as Clients CDM Advisor, Safety For Design assists the Client in taking reasonable steps to ensure that the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor are complying with their duties under Regulation 4 of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015.

We attend regular design team meetings, where we offer advice and assistance to the design team, particularly with respect to safety, health and environmental impact in the design process.

We also work with VCUK project managers and their health and safety team to offer a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ perspective on ‘day to day’ operations.

The Client also uses Safety For Design to audit operations so as to provide ‘real time’ overview of health and safety on site. This is particularly important as the market is a ‘live’ environment with difficult traffic and pedestrian management issues all of which is/can be affected by the construction activities.
